Many Lifeline providers offer tablets (like an 8-inch Android device) instead of a smartphone. However, under FCC rules governing device subsidies, you are almost always required to pay a one-time co-pay (typically .01) to receive the tablet. It is rarely completely "free."
The tablets provided are generally entry-level devices designed for basic tasks: checking email, reading the news, and attending telehealth appointments. They are not powerful enough for intensive gaming or heavy video editing, but they are excellent tools for staying connected on a larger screen.
